Update #1 e-mail sent out 7 October 2011.

Dear Antarctican - Dear Bibliophile,

Most of you who receive this e-mail were contacted last March about a gathering in Jaffrey, NH, scheduled for 15-17 June 2012.

There were many enthusiastic responses. The event is definitely going ahead.

Here is the first update on how things are progressing.

Have a look at the website for the gathering at http://www.antarctic-circle.org/gathering.htm

Much new content has been added since March and there have been changes.

At the moment, 32 persons have said they are planning to attend. If you go to http://www.antarctic-circle.org/gathering-attendees.htm you will see these listed. There are several booksellers, collectors and authors among the list; also, people from Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and throughout the US. (Attendance will be limited to no more than 100 people.)

Also, 36 have expressed interestÊin coming and are listed at http://www.antarctic-circle.org/gathering-interested.htm

To summarize how gathering will be organized (there is far more detail on the website):
• Informal, so as to encourage as much interaction between participants as possible.

• No long papers; in almost all instances short presentations by attendees, generally 15 minutes or less.
For subjects already volunteered see http://www.antarctic-circle.org/gathering-subject.htm
For subject ideas see http://www.antarctic-circle.org/gathering-subjectideas.htm (And please send in any suggestions.)

• Depending on the interests of the attendees, there may be break-away sessions. (The registration form, available January or February, will include a questionnaire.)

• Significant time, perhaps the whole of Saturday morning, will be spent having participants explain their Antarctic and Bibliophilic interests with attendant discussion. This will set up networking opportunities for the remainder of the weekend.

• Participation. Attendees will be encouraged to either make a presentation or to ask questions and, in some cases, to help out with logistics.

• Attendees will be encouraged to bring books, artifacts, images, etc., for "show and tell." There will be display cases available.

• Booksellers will be able to set up small displays of books for sale. Attendees are welcome to bring books for sale or trade.

• Affordable. The cost has not been set but should be something like $25-50 per person to which would be added whatever the Saturday night dinner will cost. I would expect the total to certainly be less than $100. The goal is to break even.

• An attempt will be made to place those interested in local homes for the weekend although there are a number of accommodation options included on the website.

• Fun. We hope to make the weekend a good time for all.
What happens next? In January or February 2012 an Update 2 will be sent out with additional and revised information. The cost will have been set and the registration process will be unveiled.

If you have any questions or comments, please send them on.
