Bob Finch has sadly died.
In July I was visiting Seattle and staying with fellow-collector Marty Greene. On July 27th Marty and I took ferry out to Bainbridge Island and spent a very pleasant hour or so with Bob Finch, the dean of American polar booksellers and now retired. He and Carol have a lovely condo in the center of the main town and we enjoyed catching up. Both Marty and I—and scores of others—depended on Bob as we built our collections. Earlier on that trip I visited Cameron Treleaven, a close colleague of Bob's and the proprietor of Aquila Books in Calgary. If you're ever in the area be sure to visit the shop. Maggs Bros. was established in the 1850s by Uriah Maggs,
great-great-grandfather of the current chairman John Maggs. Within the
company there are some eight departments which cover a wide range of
subjects, and issue between them some 15 to 20 catalogues and lists a year.
Of these the Travel department publishes at least two general Voyage &
Travels catalogues per year, each of which includes a separate section for
